Harley Quinn/Suicide Squad

So, my daughter is obsessed with Harley Quinn.  The smart-mouthed, sassy, crazy psychopath has been one of her favorites for a long time.

She won tickets to SLC Comic Con with the Wonder Woman outfit and pleaded for me to make her a Harley Quinn outfit to wear at SLCC.

I'm reading that lots of people are offended by dressing little girls (my daughter is 12) up as the trashy anti-hero.  I want my daughter to continue to enjoy costume, but be modest and age-appropriate.

These are images from the movie costume.

I'm a purist when it comes to movie-inspired costumes.  I want to keep as true to the movie as I can, within reason.  I also want to not spend a ton of money on the costume.  My goal is to keep it under the cost of a 3-day ComiCon pass ($55).

I bought the "Daddy's Little Monster" tee shirt for my girl for Christmas.  It was instantly too tight for her comfort.  We plan to cut out the logo and sew it down to a new white tee shirt.

We are not going to add the embroidered jacket.

The booty shorts will be substantially longer.  They will still be red/blue sequins, but will be snug and about fingertip length.

I found a YouTube video to make the pistol using a jigsaw, so she has a project to work on with her daddy's power tools.  This will help her understand (I hope) the amount of time and work that goes into creating a costume of this specialized character.  She will also fashion her own baseball bat.

I've tasked her with researching Harley's doodles and tattoos, and she will be writing on her skin and wearing fishnets over them.  I found a pair of navy blue cotton fishnets that may not be ruined before the day is over.

Harley's belt will be a black belt with  plastic gold studs.  The wristbands will be four rows of plastic gold studs mounted to black pleather bands with elastic for slip on/off closure.

Originally, she was insisting that she needed to wear heels on her boots, "just like Harley in the movie."  After a trip to the thrift store and making her wear high heels for 10 minutes, she has conceded that high-tops would probably be okay if I can make the tops look like the boots from the movie.  Yay for Parenting Wins!  I bought fake stretch leather in black and white to build into boots that look like the movie.
For the "Puddin" collar, I have craft foam in gold glitter with sticky-backed lettering.  There will be a ring on the collar.  She will also not have the "Yes" and "Sir" wrist cuffs.
