Ka'Ri Maithuna

I've had a few encounters with both the local 501st and Rebel Legion. After talking with them and watching what they do, especially at Cons and in larger cities, I decided I want to be part of it. The pictures below are from the Rebel Legion Forum and websites.

Light Saber

Mara Jade's Saber Hilt (Traywick Designs, Etsy) |
I had some frustration with the light saber. Originally, I used a foil spray point that looked amazing - super shiny and metallic... absolutely gorgeous. When I hit it with the polyurethane clear coat, the paint turned to pudding and sloughed off the saber. It looked like melted candle wax. Unfortunately, the paint had to be sanded off. I repainted the saber by hand with enamel paint (aluminum and black).

Added screws and declared it finished. In addition to the issue with the paint, the button that came with the saber didn't fit into the slide hinge to hook it on the belt. I used the button that was provided with the belt hinge and screwed it into one of the pre-drilled holes with one of the tiny screws from MJ's saber. |
Belt Pouches
Obi Wan's pouches (from RoTS) have the following measurements:
- the gold-button pouch is 4.5 inches wide x 3 inches tall.
- the tall fluted pouch is 5 inches tall x 3 inches wide.
- the wide fluted pouch is 3 inches tall x 5 inches wide.
- the smallest pouch is 3 inches tall x ~1.75 inches wide

And... the braid is twisting. That wasn't planned. |
Fabric
I had lots of options for fabric to use for the Jedi ensemble.

Medium green/light moss cotton (inner tunic), light sage twill and underside of twill |
I ended up using the light sage cotton shantung (Fashion Fabrics on ebay) for the outer tunic, the cotton light moss color for the inner tunic, and the dark green cotton for the tabard. I am still undecided which color to use for the obi. The current plan is to use the light moss/medium green color, but I'll likely change my mind again. :)
Inner Tunic
I regret that I didn't take any in-progress photos of the inner tunic. I followed the suggestion on the RL Forum for using the same pattern for the inner tunic as for the outer tunic, just adding 4" to the hem so it can be tucked into the pants. I also added 6" to the sleeve, and gathered it up from the wrist to the elbow to simulate the bunching shown on the movie tunics.
I did the shoulder tucks and the pin tucks on the collar. I top-stitched the pleats down on the inner tunic and am debating whether or not I like the finished effect. First, I like how neat and symmetrical they remain. I also like the "finished" look with the top-stitching. On the other side, it doesn't have the organic, slightly informal, natural look that the Jedi style seems to embrace. Jury is still out on this.
Outer Tunic
I did the patterning in muslin, following Kris Antilles' OBK (Obi Wan Kenobi) concept.
Collar and sleeves are pinned in place and on the dress dummy. Baby-cat (my son's skittish, semi-neurotic feline) was feeling photogenic.

Color scheme check. I'm not 100% sold on the tan pants. They'd be better if they were gray ... I have a little bit of time to look, right? hahaha |

Color check: Inner tunic, outer tunic, tabard. |

Collar with pleats showing that I sewed down the pleats at the inner fold, so the seam was hidden but the pleats didn't shift. |
After the uncertainty of the under tunic pleats, I wanted to try something slightly different on the pleats on the outer tunic. I used 1" of fabric to make each 1/2" pleat. There was lots of pinning and ironing. Then, I temporarily pushed the pleat over and sewed the underside down to the skin side of the collar. I restored the original pleat, effectively hiding my seam.

Obi
I couldn't decide if I wanted the obi to be dark green or the medium green, so I made it reversible.
